iClicker is a student engagement system that uses active learning techniques to increase classroom engagement. It provides low-stakes, low-stress interaction between students and the content, providing instructors with in-the-moment learning data. This resource offers some support for implementing iClicker quizzes and polls.

Using iClicker Polls and Quizzes

Polls and quizzes using iClicker are useful whether a class is remote, hybrid, or in-person. Including polls and quizzes in your class has benefits such as i) encouraging participation, ii) allowing you to gauge how well students understand the material, and iii) giving you the chance to provide immediate feedback to your students.  iClicker questions can also be used to facilitate group work.  At the end of a class, Exit Polls give you a chance to understand how well your learning objectives for the class were met.

Difference Between Polls and Quizzes

  • Polls are typically what instructors use for asking iClicker questions during class. Students answer these questions one at a time as the instructor makes them available throughout class. Any of the iClicker question types (multiple choice, number, short answer, target, or multiple select) can be used in a poll. This mode can be configured to send a picture of the question to students’ devices.
  • When using iClicker Quizzes, students can answer multiple questions at once. This mode is only compatible with multiple choice questions. Unlike polls, a quiz cannot be set to send students a picture of the questions, so a copy of the questions must be made available to students via a paper handout or a slideshow.
